Botswana takes the second spot among African nations on the Scorecard again this year behind South Africa. However, the country’s performance needs to be interpreted with caution in the absence of credible data on various measures of connectivity.
Botswana has a moderate consumer infrastructure, with respectable mobile telephony coverage and penetration. The country gives its best performance in business usage and skills, driven by good usage of outgoing international connectivity. The country’s performance on government-related metrics is moderate and closer to the median scores within its peer group.
However, a key concern is its weak business infrastructure, particularly the poor broadband penetration, and no available data for business spending on hardware, software and computer services
Botswana, therefore, requires a stronger push from the government and the enterprises to boost its Information and Communications Technology infrastructure, with a special focus on developing advanced broadband networks.
Businesses in South Africa spend the highest amount of any resource and efficiency driven economy on computer services
