Egypt Connectivity

score 2.97

Egypt needs to look beyond mobile to boost overall ICT development

Egypt finishes in the bottom ten performers of the resource and efficiency driven economies of the Connectivity Scorecard.

A strong mobile showing notwithstanding, the country emerges fourth among the six African nations featured in the study. This can be attributed to the country’s very weak performance on business related metrics. In the consumer segment too, poor Internet and broadband penetration and usage levels pull down the country’s score.

While Egypt does have a strong performance in the government related metrics, this segment carries a minimal weighting in the study and does little to boost the country’s overall score.

Egypt has a specific call to action – it has to replicate the success it has tasted in the mobile sector. Only then can it hope to generate dedicated access and guaranteed bandwidth availability crucial for the country’s overall ICT development.
