Indonesia Connectivity

score 2.13

Strong Literacy Rate Is Highlight Amongst Poor Connectivity Scores

Indonesia’s low ranking on the 2009 Connectivity Scorecard reflects its poor showing on almost every performance metric.  Broadband and Internet infrastructure are weak, and while mobile and PSTN coverage are better, they are still near the bottom of the sample.  The somewhat high proportion of the population with mobile coverage is the only bright spot in when examining consumer infrastructure.  In terms of consumer usage, excellent literacy and solid gender equality with regards to internet access are also positive points.

Business connectivity, however, is marred by extremely low scores in almost every area, with the exception of high school enrolment which hovers just below the median.  Government spending on IT resources and the availability of online services match the Indonesia’s low ranking in the business segment of the Scorecard.

Indonesia is hampered by only partial deregulation of their telecommunications industry, as well as by a lack of investment in human development which could increase the nation’s ability to develop a more ICT-friendly economy.
