Indonesia is a moderately poor performer on the Connectivity Scorecard 2010. The country surpasses India to take 20th place, largely on account of its good performance in consumer infrastructure. However, it continues to trail its South East Asian neighbors Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam on the Scorecard.
Good mobile penetration boosts Indonesia’s score in consumer infrastructure, while relatively high literacy rates prop up its performance in consumer usage and skills. However, the country needs to focus on developing its broadband and internet infrastructure, an area where it lags behind many of its resource and efficiency-driven peers.
The country delivers a very poor performance in business infrastructure, reflective of low investments by Indonesian businesses in IT hardware, software and knowledge. Respectable secondary school enrolment levels salvage its business usage and skills score, while its performance on government-related metrics is let down by a disappointing performance in government usage and skills.
In order to fully realize the potential of Information and Communications Technology, Indonesia needs to develop a strong business infrastructure and improve the use of technology as a tool for government to reach out to its citizens.
Businesses in South Africa spend the highest amount of any resource and efficiency driven economy on computer services
