Italy’s weak scoring in almost every category places it behind other G-7 countries on the 2009 Connectivity Scorecard. While consumer infrastructure is highlighted by good 3G subscription rates, broadband penetration is low and consumer internet usage could be described as moderate at best. Government-related internet scores are also not at a level that could be considered competitive with other European nations. Contributing factors to these scores include an ageing population and a conservative attitude towards the adoption of technology.
Italy’s business connectivity is similarly disappointing. In terms of infrastructure, both secure servers and PCs see a low penetration rate, indicating a lack of sophistication in e-commerce. Businesses also display a low rate of buying and selling on the internet. Scores related to business data services usage and corporate spending on IT resources are higher, but still not at the same level as many of their peer nations.
Businesses in South Africa spend the highest amount of any resource and efficiency driven economy on computer services
