Japan’s most impressive performance on the 2009 Connectivity Scorecard was related to consumer infrastructure. 3G penetration is excellent, and advanced fixed-line networks are deployed on a wide scale throughout the country. Japan is a world leader in terms of FTTP networks, and consumer bandwidth is also much higher than that typically found in Europe or North America. Consumer connectivity data suggests a solid, general internet usage but weaker software spending and use of internet banking.
In terms of business connectivity, Japan displayed strong corporate revenues related to IP and Ethernet, as well as an excellent ratio of jobs requiring ICT skills. Average scores were recorded when it came to businesses buying and selling online, IT expenditures and enterprise telephony usage. Japan’s E-Government ranking is also average, with good broadband access in schools and a fair amount of usage recorded for online government services.
Businesses in South Africa spend the highest amount of any resource and efficiency driven economy on computer services
