Turkey – Falls due to weak business usage

Turkey loses five places in its group of resource and efficiency-driven economies on the Connectivity Scorecard 2010. Last year’s runner-up, it still reports a strong infrastructure but lags behind in ICT usage and skills.

Turkey’s robust consumer infrastructure is marked by high broadband, mobile and PSTN penetration. It also scores well on consumer usage and skills metrics such as frequent internet usage and uptake of voice services. The country’s business infrastructure is above average, with high penetration of secure internet servers, and substantial business investments in ICT. Turkey also impresses on government-related metrics such as government spending on ICT and provision of government services online.

However, the country falters in business usage and skills, where its score is considerably lower than one might expect given the state of its business infrastructure. Turkey has made considerable progress in developing a robust ICT infrastructure but its weaker usage and skills scores indicate that the country is yet to fully realize its benefits. Therefore, it needs to lay greater stress on driving the adoption of new technology and creating greater awareness about ICT.
